History of Dahl Funeral Home
Spooner, Wisconsin, was originally established in 1882 as a settlement called Chandler. Chandler was moved approximately 2 1/2 miles south of its original site, and in 1883 it was settled as Spooner, located along the Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad. It was named after a railroad attorney, John Coit Spooner, who later went on to become a state senator and presidential advisor. The city of Spooner was established in 1910 and recently celebrated its 100th anniversary.

The Dahl Furniture and Funeral Home was established in 1930 when Harry Dahl purchased the Isabella Grocery Store where he had been employed for 10 years. After purchasing the store, he discontinued the grocery line and opened the furniture store and funeral home combination business. Both the furniture store and the funeral home were located at 234 Walnut Street, with the funeral home located in the back of the furniture store.

On May 9, 1947, the furniture store/furniture home was destroyed by a fire that swept the whole north side of Walnut Street. A temporary office for the funeral home was established in the vacant Episcopal parsonage on the southeast corner of Elm and Summit streets. The furniture store was rebuilt at its former location, while the Episcopal parsonage was purchased and then resold and moved to a location on South Summit. Mr. Dahl then built the present funeral home, and, although there have been several additions and cosmetic changes to the original building through the years, it remains conveniently located at its current address of 221 Elm Street. Dahl Funeral Home also owned and operated the Municipal Ambulance Service for 35 years until it was sold to the city of Spooner in early 1970.

Harry’s son, Mort Dahl, joined his father’s businesses in 1968 and took over the businesses in 1979 after his father’s death. Mort continued to run both businesses until 1989 when he sold the funeral home to Gary Nathan, who then owned Anderson-Nathan Funeral Homes in Hayward. With the ownership of the funeral home passing from Mr. Dahl to Mr. Nathan, the funeral home was able to conduct cremations at the Hayward facility (Hayward Cremation Services), thus maintaining quality control and complete knowledge of the entire cremation process from the time of death until the return of the cremated remains. The Dahl Funeral Home continues to conduct our cremations at the Hayward facility.

Mr. Nathan continued to operate the Dahl Funeral Home until he sold it in 1997 to Keystone America, Inc. In 2010, Dahl Funeral Home joined the Service Corporation International family of Dignity Memorial® providers. The staff of Dahl Funeral Home includes committed professionals from the community who continue the tradition of quality service.
